Scooter's Life

Scott Christopher Schneider
April 2, 1980 - January 23, 2016

Work Hard. Play Harder.

Scott (Scooter) C. Schneider, 35, took his final ride on Friday, January 23, 2016 up in the Tug Hill area. He was born and raised in Vestal, NY and worked at Hilliard Corp. in Elmira, NY as a mechanical engineer. He loved everything with a motor and spent much of his time building and rebuilding cars, drag racing, snowmobiling, and on his boat. He embodied the phrase: "Work hard. Play harder." He was an Eagle Scout and previously a longtime member of the Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad.

There was a core that we all saw in our relationships with him. Scotty had a lot of love in his heart.

He had an amazing love for life. Love of a full life. Work hard and play harder just made sense to him. And, amazingly enough, he was incredibly lucky to be able to bring that love for play into his work - as well as his unbelievable intelligence. After only a few short months at Hilliard, Scooter was able to solve a problem that had been plaguing the engineers there for years. He designed and patented a clutch that enabled the company to offer a superior product. Hilliard made him a project manager which allowed him to work with several companies and just about every type of ATV, sometimes before they even hit the market. They sent him all over the country to represent them and meet with customers.

And that problem solving. How he loved that too. He loved challenges and projects. So many projects, specifically challenges and projects having to do with speed and power... So many cars - both street and race cars ... and police cars - trucks, 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, mudding vehicles, boats, ATVs, snow plows, farm equipment, the list went on and on. How many build-from-scratch projects? How many break-down-completely then build-up-from-parts? How many factory extras? How many discussions that included the question of how to add more power? Or Nitrous? How many times did he help the broken Subarus?

How many times did he help? His love to help was probably one of the biggest parts of him. It didn't matter where you were, who you were, what he was doing, or what YOU were doing when you broke it, got it stuck, or got yourself stranded... He was there. He not only loved to help, but he lived to help. Starting from boy scouts, continuing with fixing vehicles, his time with the squad, volunteering during storms and floods ...

And finally, his love for family. He took his friends in as family members, and his friends' families, he especially loved kids and babies. But how you knew you meant the most to him was how much he could truly express himself to you... via frying pan over the head, or his smirking attempts to lie, or his scolding for having low air in your tires, or his insanely good ability to push your buttons. But through all of that, bottom line remained the same - he was a true big brother. He would truly go to bat for his sisters when they needed him. Period. He was his parents' baby boy. And he stayed home and watched over them - no matter how much they all drove each other crazy - he was their rock. And that solid foundation that he was, was centered with all this love that he had to give and enjoy: his love for life, his love for play, his love for challenges, his love to help, and his love for friends and family. Please remember that love, and give it to others each day - as he gave to each and every one of us every moment of every day.
