This scholarship is in memoriam of Scott Schneider, who passed unexpectedly in January 2016. His friends wanted to keep his memory alive and began hosting fundraising events in his name. Together with his family, they have decided to put the majority of the money raised toward an academic scholarship in his name.
This scholarship is meant for a student that is looking to begin at BCC and then transfer to BU, as he did nearly 20 years ago. It begins with $2000 to a student heading into BCC's Engineering or Technologies programs from a local high school and is meant to follow that student with additional funds as they transfer into a similar program at Binghamton University.
In honor of Scooter, we are looking for a student that isn't necessarily academically gifted, but more of a hands-on learner. Scott excelled in engineering: he created and patented new technologies; was well-respected in his field nationwide; and could troubleshoot, fix, and improve on anything with an engine - but book-learning was always difficult for him. This scholarship is aimed to help those that wish to advance their education and earning potential through college, even though they may already excel in practice. (And, as would have been a relief for Scott, we are even offering the option for applicants to submit a video essay instead of a written one in their application!)
Scott was also active in the community: he was an Eagle Scout and actively volunteered in several organizations such as Harpurs Ferry Ambulance, Vestal Volunteer Emergency Services, and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at BU as an alum. He was a loved community member that was always available to help when anything was needed. As such, extracurricular community service will also be considered in the application process.
Please pass this information on to any students you think would be interested.
The application is available through BCC's website at https://sunybroome.awardspring.com/Home/Scholarships .
Thank you, and we hope to see applications from your students soon!
